For the first time in school history, the Royals are Baron Cup Champions! CVCA defeated Aurora 2-1 in overtime on Sunday to cap off an incredible run through the Baron Cup Tournament. It was a gutsy comeback that finished with a thrilling overtime game winner. A full team effort propelled the Royals to one of the biggest wins in team history.
Both CVCA and Aurora entered Sunday's championship game aware of what was at stake. The first period was highly contested with members of both teams flying around the ice. Early jitters and solid goaltending kept both teams scoreless through the first period. Aurora was able to break the tie in the 2nd. They collected a loose puck in front of the net and scored to take a 1-0 lead. The score would stay 1-0 through the end second period. As time ticked away in the third period, the Royals never quit.
Bayley McRitchie found the net with just under 6 minutes remaining to tie the score. CVCA continued to create chances after that, but the period ended with the score tied. Overtime was next. It was the second straight overtime game for Aurora, who also had to start this period down a man. The Royals grabbed momentum in the overtime period by creating chance after chance.
Hayden Dickerson rocketed the puck into the back of the net just over 2 minutes into overtime to win the game. The team and fans went crazy as CVCAÂ clinched their first ever Baron Cup Championship.
