CVCA and Avon Lake opened up the 2017 Baron Cup III on Monday evening. The Royals entered the game as the #4 seed out of the Blue North division of the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League. Avon Lake had earned the #1 seed and entered the game as the favorite. In fact, the Shoremen had defeated CVCA twice this season by a combined score of 10-2. None of that concerned the Royals. They have been on a mission since their team trip to Canada and have been playing their best hockey in the new year. 

The Royals grabbed control of the game with an early goal from Bayley McRitchie. They held on to the one goal advantage for the remainder of the first period. The lead grew to 3-0 after second period goals by John O'Connor and Christian Beckett. Avon Lake netted one of their own before the period ended to make the score 3-1. The third period would see lots of action, but no scoring. The Royals held on to upset the #1 seeded Avon Lake. Senior goalie Brooks Montgomery registered 27 saves on the night. Captains Noah Polanski and Hayden Dickerson played major roles in the win without scoring. 

With the win, CVCA advances to the Semi-final game on Saturday, February 11th. They will play the winner of Mayfield and Lakewood at 1pm at the Brooklyn Rec Center.
