Streaks
The Royals have won a school record 10 straight games since losing to still undefeated Streetsboro (Week 1) and Lake Catholic (Week 2) to open the season. The Lancers started the season on a 9 game win streak before falling to VASJ in Week 10.
Return to Twinsburg
CVCA is 1-0 at Twinsburg's Tiger Stadium. The Royals hosted Manchester in Week 10 of the 2006 season when heavy rain left Royals Stadium unplayable. They won the game by score of 20-0 for the first ever win over the Panthers. Also of note, it was the 100th game in program history.
Playoff History:
Gilmour Academy is making its 16th playoff appearance and third consecutive in Division III, after competing in Division IV during the 2020 and 2021 OHSAA Football Playoffs and in Division V for the Lancers previous 11 playoff appearances, dating back to 1995. This will be the seventh trip to the Regional Semifinals for Gilmour Academy. All six prior Regional Semifinal appearances occurred while the Lancers were competing in Division V. Gilmour was 0-6 in those games. The most recent Regional Semifinal game for Gilmour was a 2018 game, also held at Twinsburg's Tiger Stadium, against eventual state champion Orrville. The game pitted the teams with the two best running backs in the state in Orrville's Marquael Parks and Gilmour's C.J. Charleston. The Lancers fell in three overtimes by a score of 50-43. The Daily Record Game Recap: Orrville 50 Gilmour Academy 43 (3OT)
More recently, Gilmour is 3-4 in playoff games since 2020, with two of those three wins occurring in the last two weeks against #15 Akron East and #10 Maple Heights. games. Overall, Gilmour Academy is 8-15 all-time in playoff games, 3-2 in Division III playoff games (all since 2022) and 0-6 all-time in neutral site playoff games (all six prior Regional Semifinals contests).
Gilmour Academy Playoff History
CVCA is making its 13th appearance in the OHSAA Playoffs, and this is just the third time CVCA has competed in the Division III bracket. The Royals' prior ten appearances were all in Division IV. CVCA is 5-12 all time in playoff games and has only played one prior playoff game at a neutral site in school history. The Royals appeared in their only other Regional Semifinal game on November 16, 2019, in Maple Heights against the Perry Pirates. The fourth-seeded Royals lost to top-seeded Perry 37-14 on night where the game-time temperate was 35°. It was the second straight season that Perry ended CVCA's playoff run. Akron Beacon Journal Recap: Perry 37 CVCA 14
The following season, in 2020, CVCA and Perry met again with the Royals avenging the two prior losses in a 55-28 Regional Quarterfinal victory at Perry (ABJ story).
In similar fashion, the 2024 Royals avenged a 42-0 loss to Chardon that sent them home from the 2023 playoffs with last Friday's 19-16 Regional Semifinal victory (game highlights).
CVCA Playoff History
First Meeting:
CVCA and Gilmour Academy have never met before on the gridiron.
Gilmour is 0-1 against members of CVCA former home, the Principals' Athletic Conference – the 2018 playoff loss to Orrville.
Gilmour is 1-4-1 all-time against members of CVCA's new conference, the North Coast Conference. The Lancers tied Lake Catholic 12-12 in 1972; they split a home and home with Holy Name in 1981-82; they lost their only meeting with Padua in 1975; and Gilmour lost a pair of games against Elyria Catholic to wrap up the regular season in Week 10 of 2015 and 2016.
Scouting the Lancers: Gilmour has two players that are currently listed on The Tony Fisher Award watch list, which is the high school player of the year award presented by The News Herald. Senior quarterback Cooper Pantek has completed 166 of 248 passes (66.9 percent) for 2811 yards and a school record 36 touchdown passes with just two interceptions this season. Four of those touchdown passes have come in the postseason. Fellow senior Sean Dillard has been on the receiving end of ten of those touchdown passes and is also on the Fisher Watch List. He had 56 receptions on the season for 953 yards. Last Friday, sophomore running back Nate Lennon took the first play from scrimmage 74 yards right up the middle to give the Lancers a lead they would never relinquish. Senior Aiden McNamara added the next three scores – all on the ground, which followed his four-touchdown performance in the playoff opener against Akron East. Late in the game against Maple Heights, Ohio State TE commit Brody Lennon hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Panteck. The senior has caught 34 passes for 669 yards and 11 touchdowns this year. Panteck has a pair of additional receiving threats in 6-2 seniors Lars Broberg (10 regular season TDs) and Nick Iliano, each of whom had more than 25 receptions and over 480 yards apiece this season. The defense is led by Lennon and senior Bernie McDonald, who had 8 and 6 regular season sacks, respectively. The 11 wins this season matches a school record, accomplished twice before, in 2004 and 2018.
Scouting the Royals: Junior quarterback Charley Levak orchestrated a game-winning drive against Chardon last week. CVCA forced a defensive stop and got the ball back with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, trailing 16-12, at their own 40-yard line. Levak finished the night 9 of 23 for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Half of those yards came on two plays on the game-winning drive, as it took him just 46 seconds first to connect with senior Ryan Wiehe for a 25-yard gain, and then he hit junior Joey Kopec for the 35-yard catch-and-run, which proved to be the game winner. Levak and Kopec had connected earlier on a 25-yard scoring strike. CVCA held Chardon to 140 yards rushing (130 below their per game average) and the Royals defense is yielding just 90 yards a game on the ground over the last 11 weeks. Conversely, the Royals offense averages 274 yards a game on the ground with Kopec leading the way with 1.043 yards on the season, but three other players (Levak, Wiehe and sophomore Zac Anderson) have rushed for more than 400 yards on the season. Nine different Royals have rushing touchdowns this season led by Levak (11) and Kopec (10). Junior Nick Schober has found the end zone six times, while Wiehe has five scores to his credit. Through the air, junior Brayden Harris leads the team with 27 receptions for 427 yards and four touchdowns catches. Kopec's two touchdown catches last week gave him three on the season. Kopec also has a passing touchdown and two return touchdowns – a 98-yard kickoff return against Orrville and a pick-six against University School. The win against Chardon gave CVCA its first 10-win season in program history.
