The CVCA baseball team faced off against the Gilmour Academy Lancers on Wednesday in a Division II District Championship Game. The game was played at Gilmour Academy but the Royals were the home team as the higher seed. The Lancers scored first behind a lead-off triple and led 1-0. CVCA senior
Julian Hernandez quickly answered with a lead-off home run to pull the Royals back even. CVCA starter
Nik Wirsching settled and and kept the Lancers off balanced and frustrated. He pitched 4.1 innings allowing just one run and three hits while striking out three. Freshman
Alex Mammone delivered a huge 2 out RBI single in the home half of the 4th inning to put CVCA in front 2-1. After the strong outing by Wirsching, senior
Matthew Porter picked up right were he left off. Porter went 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and holding Gilmour scoreless. Sophomore
Kyle Shaw recorded the final out of the game for the Royals. The Royals pitching and defense was the story of the night in the 2-1 win. This was the first district championship for CVCA baseball since 2004. It was also the first at the Division II level. The program now has three district titles on its resume (2002, 2004, 2024). The Royals will face Kenston in the Regional Semi-final. That game is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th at 5pm at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton.
