5/30/2025 7:25:00 AM

The CVCA baseball team faced off against Buckeye on Thursday night in the Division III District Championship game. The Royals and Bucks met at Massillon High School with the winner looking to advance to the round of 16. This was another tight battle for the Royals and seven innings wasn't enough to determine the winner. CVCA grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Jonah Gaudio walked to score Alex Mammone and Jacob Lancy walked to score Thad Eaton. Buckeye answered in the 4th inning with a 2 out 2 run single to tie the score. Both team's pitchers limited chances throughout the game. Kyle Shaw started an allowed just 2 runs in 4 innings of work. Alex Mammone was excellent and went 4 scoreless innings in releif. Buckeye's best chance came in the top of the 8th inning. After a sacrifice bunt, they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with just one out. A failed squeeze attempt and a line-out ended the inning and brought the Royals up with a chance to end it. Connor McGough led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Alex Mammone singled through the right side and CVCA had runners at the corners. After an intentional walk to load the bases, senior Nik Wirsching step to plate. He drove a sacrifice fly to center field and the Royals secured the 3-2 walk-off victory for the District Championship. This is the 4th District Title in program history and the second consecutive championship. CVCA will face Wooster on Wednesday, June 4th in the Regional Semifinal at Hudson. There are just 16 teams left in Division III.
