The CVCA baseball team secured a thrilling extra inning victory over Lake on Thursday night to win the OHSAA Divsion III Northeast 1 District Championship. The Royals scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on for the 7-4 win. The game lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes and was quite a battle. The Blue Streaks scored first on a two out single in the bottom of the first inning. The game remained 1-0 through 4 inning of plays as both starting pitchers held the offenses at bay. The Royals broke through in the 5th inning with a two out rally. Connor McGough and Jacob Lancy both singled to setup the inning. McGough would later score on a wild pitch. Jonah Gaudio followed with a double down the left field line to score Lancy and CVCA grabbed the lead. Peyton Drabick followed with an infield single and a steal. Alex Mammone ripped a line drive to center to score Gaudio and Drabick. The Royals led 4-1 entering the bottom of the 5th. Lake was able to answer after the first two batters of the inning reached by walk and an error. They both came around to score, but Lake left the bases loaded and CVCA led 4-3. In the 6th inning, the Blue Streaks scored the tying run on a CVCA fielding error. Neither team scored in the 7th inning so the game went to extras tied at 4. The 8th and 9th innings went by without a winner as both teams worked out of jams. In the 10th, CVCA broke the tie. Connor McGough walked with 1 out and moved into scoring position with a steal. He score on an error by Lake and the Royals moved in front. CVCA added two insurance runs when Jacob Lancy scored on a wild pitch and Peyton Drabick scored on an error. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th, Lake was able to load the bases on two walks and a hit batter. The next batter hit a deep fly ball to right field. With the game on the line, Bo Lanzilotta made a great catch on the run to secure victory. The Royals have now won 3 straight District Championships. The boys moved to 21-8 on the season and will play in the Regional Semifinal on Wednesday, June 3rd at the Ballpark at Hudson.
