CVCA hosted Cardinal Mooney in Boys Soccer on Tuesday night. This match-up goes back for years and includes many great games. The Royals would control possession and the game on this night. Strong defense and solid finishing combined to give the home team a big win. Final Score: CVCA 8 - Mooney 0
The Royals wasted no time scoring in this one. In the 2nd minute,
Jay Patsch finished a through ball from
Ryan Winquist for the early 1-0. Less than a minute later,
Ryan Winquist found the back of the net from 20 yards out. CVCA led 2-0 before many fans could find their seats. Sophomore
Ryan Winquist would score his second goal of the night with 22:50 left in the 1st half. With just under 4 minutes left in the first half, senior
Braden Petno would join the scoring. He took a
Ryan Winquist pass and curled one around the keeper for a goal. The Royals led 4-0 at halftime.
The second half would be more of the same. CVCA scored less than 5 minutes in when
Jay Patsch scored his second of the night. This time he was assisted by
Braden Petno. After a foul by Mooney,
Braden Petno increased the Royals led to 6 goals by scoring on a penalty kick.
Zach Mathoslah scored goal #7 for CVCA. After a
Braden Petno cross,
Jay Patsch's shot deflected off the goalie, and Mathoslah calmly tapped it in. The final goal of the night was scored by
Zack Venus. He cleaned up a deflected shot off the foot of
Will Lux.
Not to be overshadowed, the CVCA defense was also impressive. They allowed zero shots on goal and limited Mooney's attacking possessions. The back line of
Zack Venus,
Colin Gaines,
Hudson Hall,
Brady Bissonette,
Jake Brookbank, and Josh Flenniken worked very well as a group. Goalkeepers
Brooks Montgomery and
Isaiah Slabaugh were ready but untested in this one.
