The CVCA football team hosted Lake Catholic on Friday night in the first North Coast Conference game of the 2026 season. The Royals and Cougars have battled hard over the last few years. Lake Catholic was able to score first in this game. A long pass gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, CVCA pulled even. Alex Mammone finished off a 13 play, 71 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. Lake Catholic was able to put together an 11 play, 62 yard touchdown drive to regain the lead halfway through the 2nd quarter. With just under 1 minute to play in the first half, the visiting Cougars struck again. They connect on another long pass and increased their lead to 21-7. With Lake Catholic set to receive the ball to start the 2nd half, CVCA need to find a way to flip momentum. The defense came up with back to back 4th down stops, but the offense couldn't break through. CVCA moved back to within one score when Alex Mammone connected with Tommy Kopec for a 26 yard touchdown with 3 minutes left in the game. Trailing 21-13, the Royals would need an onside kick or a turnover for a chance to tie the score. Lake Catholic recovered the ensuing kickoff and on the next play broke a 60 yard touchdown run to secure victory. The Royals move to 3-3 with the loss and start conference play 0-1. They will look to bounce back with another home game this Friday against Holy Name.
