The 2024 football season came to an end on Friday night. The Royals fell to Gilmour Academy by a score of 35-28 in a Division III Region 9 Semifinal game at Twinsburg Tiger Stadium. The loss ends a historic season for CVCA. This was the first time the team played in Week 13 of the season and just their second appearance in a Regional Semifinal. The team set a new school record for wins in a season with 10. All 10 wins came as part of a winning streak that spanned weeks three through twelve. That is the longest win streak in program history. The Royals battled hard to the end on Friday night and have much to be proud of. It was an outstanding season that is sure to leave it's mark moving forward.
Friday night's game open with the high powered Gilmour offense on the field. The Lancers moved the ball well before stalling out in CVCA territory. The Royals stood tall and forced a turnover on downs to gain possession. CVCA was forced to punt on their first drive. Gilmour scored first with a touchdown late in the first quarter. Joey Kopec took the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. The CVCA defense came up with another 4th down stop on Gilmour's next drive. Junior
Charley Levak scored on a 22 yard run to give the Royals a 14-7 lead with just under 5 minutes to play in the first half. The Lancers answered with a long touchdown run to pull even. The Royals were able to move back in front on their next drive as sophomore
Zac Anderson scored from 15 yards out after another long kick return by
Joey Kopec. CVCA was looking to get a big stop as they were set to get the ball to start the third quarter. Gilmour came up with a touchdown pass with under one minute to play and the score was tied at 21 at the half. The teams combined for 28 points in just over 4 minutes of play.
CVCA got the ball first to start the 2nd half. They moved the ball well on their first drive and advance into Gilmour territory. That drive ended on a CVCA fumble that Gilmour recovered. The Lancers drove the length of the field to grab their first lead since 7-0. Both teams ended their next drive with failed 4th down conversions. After a CVCA punt, Gilmour was able to extend their lead on a long touchdown pass. The Royals trailed 35-21 with just under minutes left in the game. They were able score on their next drive. Senior
Ryan Wiehe scored on a 3 yard run and the deficit was back to one score. CVCA's onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Gilmour was able to run out the clock to secure the win.
