The CVCA football team hosted University School in the first round of the OHSAA Division III State Playoffs on Friday night. The Royals secured home field advantage by earning the #3 seed in Region 9. University School was seeded 14th. CVCA scored first with a 1 yard touchdown run by junior Charley Levak half way through the first quarter. The Royals extended their lead early in the 2nd quarter on a 28 yard run by senior Ryan Wiehe. University answered with their own touchdown drive and the score was 12-7 in favor of CVCA. With the Royals set to receive the ball to start the 2nd half, they were looking to finish the 2nd quarter with a score. Freshman Tommy Kopec scored from 15 yards out with just over a minute to play in the first quarter to push the score to 20-7. After a quick three and out, the Royals had the ball right back. They quickly moved the ball down the field and senior Calvin Warren connected on a 33 yard field goal as the half expired. CVCA's lead was now 23-7 and they entered halftime with the momentum. In the second half, the Royals were able to pull away from the Preppers. A 2 yard score by junior Joey Kopec on the opening drive of the 2nd half pushed the score to 31-7. Less than a minute later, Charley Levak connected with sophomore Zac Anderson for a 30 yard touchdown pass through the air. With a 31 point lead, the running clock rule was activated. CVCA's final score of the night came on defense. Junior Joey Kopec intercepted a pass and ran 44 yards for another touchdown. University was able to add a touchdown late, but the Royals won the game by a score of 45-14. With the win, CVCA advances to the 2nd round of the playoffs and secures another home game. They will host Chardon on Friday, November 8th at 7pm. The Royals and Hilltoppers met in the 2023 playoffs. Chardon hosted that game and came out on top. CVCA has now won 9 straight games on the season. That is the longest winning streak in school history.
