11/9/2024 8:29:00 AM

For the first time ever, the CVCA football team will play a game in Week 13. The Royals will play in a Regional Semifinal next Friday night. The Royals defeated Chardon 19-16 on Friday night to keep their season alive. It is also the first time the team has reached 10 wins in a season. They have won 10 straight games to improve to 10-2 overall. CVCA will face Gilmour Academy on Friday, November 15th. The Royals and Lancers will kickoff at 7pm at a yet to be determined location. Check back in the coming days for more information.

Friday night's game was an instant classic between the Royals and Hilltoppers. The game was full of big moments throughout. Two strong rushing attacks had to battle against strong rushing defenses. Big plays in the passing played a major part in this game. The game started with good defense. Both teams' first two possessions lasted just four plays. Chardon capitalized on a long punt return and kicked a field goal to open the scoring. The Hilltoppers recovered the ensuing kickoff after a muff by CVCA. A 50 yard touchdown pass (missed XP) put Chardon out in front by a score of 9-0. The Royals responded with a big play of their own. Senior Ryan Wiehe ran 71 yards to the end zone on the first play of the drive. CVCA trailed 9-6 after a blocked extra point. The second quarter went by scoreless but wasn't without big plays. Chardon drove the ball down to the goal line before turning the ball over on a fumble recovered by Ky'Ron Fikes. The Royals were able to move the ball on their next two drives but were unable to find points. Chardon led 9-6 at the half. The CVCA defense stood tall again to start the 2nd half of play. They forced two three and outs on the first two Hilltopper possessions. With just under 5 mintues to play in the 3rd quarter, CVCA took their first lead of the game. Juniors Charley Levak and Joey Kopec connected for a 25 yard score through the air to give the Royals a 12-9 lead. The Royals picked off Chardon on the ensuing possession but couldn't convert on a 4th down attempt. The Hilltoppers responded with their best drive of the game. They went 70 yards on 14 plays to score a go ahead touchdown with just over 5 minutes remaining. The Royals were in need of a big drive to keep their season alive and they got just that. They quickly moved the ball across midfield before a familiar pair connect to give the Royals the lead. Charley Levak hit Joey Kopec with a pass on the near sideline. Kopec shook off a defender and raced down the sideline for a 35 yard touchdown. The Royals were back in front by a score of 19-16 with just over 1 minute left in the game. Chardon threw an interception to start their next drive but forced CVCA to punt. A partially blocked punt gave Chardon the ball in CVCA territory. With the game on the line, the Royals defense again stood tall. Chardon fumbled the snap on 4th and 1 and CVCA recovered. The Royals lined up for one play in victory formation and secured the big win! It was a thrilling night in Royals Stadium that will go down in CVCA history.
