Football falls in the State Semifinal

12/1/2025 11:45:00 AM

The CVCA football team faced off against Central Catholic from Toledo on Friday night in a 2025 OHSAA Division III State Semifinal. The Royals were up for the challenge of facing a Fighting Irish team that played in the last three State Championships, winning two of them. CVCA and CC met at Fostoria Memorial Stadium on this cold night in late November. The Royals defense did an excellent job holding the Irish offense at bay through three quarter of play. Central Catholic was able to make some plays in the 4th quarter to move in front. The game came down to the final play with the Royals coming up on the short end of a 21-20 final score. It was an amazing season for CVCA as they finish with a record of 12-1. They represented very well and they put together a run the school has never seen before.

The first quarter started with both defenses forcing three and outs. After forcing and recovering a fumble on CC's second drive of the night, the Royals marched down the field for the game's first touchdown. Wesley Keeler capped off the drive with a two yard touchdown run. The Royals led 6-0 with just under four minutes to play in the 1st quarter. After another round of punts, the Irish took advantage of a short field and scored to move in front. CVCA trailed 7-6 early in the 2nd quarter. The Royals would respond with another long touchdown drive. They went 62 yards on 12 plays for the touchdown. Wesley Keeler scored again for CVCA this time on a nine yard touchdown pass by Charley Levak. The Royals were able to convert on the two point conversion and led 14-7 at the half.

CVCA received the ball to start the 2nd half and move the ball into plus territory. The drive ended with a turnover on downs, but the Royals defense again came up big. After an interception by Joey Kopec, CVCA found the end zone again. Charley Levak rolled right looking pass. With good coverage down field, Levak cut back left, made multiple defenders miss, and raced into the end zone for a 21 yard touchdown. The third quarter came to a close and the Royals led 20-7. Central Catholic started the final quarter out with a touchdown. They put together an impressive 83 yard drive to pull within one score. After a CVCA punt, the Irish had the ball just beyond midfield trailing by 6. Central Catholic scored with just under 2 minutes to play to grab their first lead of the night. The Royals were able to move the ball down the field in short order to set up a potential winning score. CVCA's field goal attempt sailed wide as the clock expired and Central Catholic advanced with a 21-20 win.
