Due to the condition of their field, Manchester was unable to host Wednesday's Varsity baseball game so the game was moved to CVCA. The field held up, and the sun stuck around for 6 of the 7 innings. Both teams were able to capitalize on the others mistakes in this highly contested battle. Manchester came away with the victory by a score of 5-4.
In the bottom of the first, the Royals looked to be gearing up for a big inning. After a leadoff out,
Steven Taylor reached on an error.
Trent Fantelli followed with a fielders choice and Taylor was safe at second due to another error. Senior
Chris Punka lined a single to left field driving in Taylor. The next pitch went to the back stop allowing Fantelli and Punka to advance, giving the Royals 2nd & 3rd with just 1 out. Unfortunately, that is where the scoring ended in the first.
The Panthers were able to respond in the 3rd inning. After the first two batters were out, a seven pitch walk kept the inning alive. That walk was followed by a single and a runner reaching first after a strikeout giving Manchester the bases loaded. A double cleared the bases, and gave the Panthers a 3 to 1 advantage. The next hitter singled to make it 4-1 before CVCA could get out of the inning.
CVCA was able to answer with 2 runs in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-3.
Steven Taylor scored on a past ball and
Noah Brook's RBI ground out scored
Trent Fantelli.
The Royals added 2 out run in the 4th to tie things up.
Drew Wilson singled. Stevent Taylor hit a pop fly to shallow right that fell and Wilson came around to score from first on Manchester's miscommunication.
Manchester then took the lead for good in the 5th scoring on a single to left. CVCA would have chances in the 5th, 6th, and 7th but were unable to push any runs across. Their biggest chance came after
Myles Burdick tripled to lead off the bottom of the 7th. A few pitches later, he was called out a home trying to advance on a wild pitch.
Chris Punka pitched 7 innings with 8 strikeout and allowed just 1 earned run.
