The baseball team traveled to Canal Fulton to take on future PAC-7 member Northwest on Thursday afternoon. The game fit the mold of a classic PAC-7 baseball battle. The Royals and Indians went back and forth all game with ties and lead changes throughout. Each time CVCA was able to score, Northwest would respond. As the host team, the Indians had the last at bats and made them count with a walk-off single to win 5-4. For the second time in two games, the Royals had an opportunity to score in their last at bat. Both times they were unable to push a run across when it mattered most.
Drew Wilson led off the game with a single and was moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by
Steven Taylor. Senior
Chris Punka stepped up and laced a double into left center to score Wilson. The next two batters grounded out ending the inning.
In the bottom half of the 1st, Northwest was able to tie up the score thanks to a couple of defensive miscues by the Royals.
CVCA would score again in the 3rd inning to regain their lead.
Josh Thacker reached on an error and
Drew Wilson followed with a single.
Steven Taylor would walk setting up bases loaded and no outs.
Chris Punka was next up and drove in Thacker with a sacrifice fly to left. Wilson and Taylor also tagged and advanced. Wilson would finish the scoring for the Royals when he darted home after a wild pitch. After two and a half innings, CVCA led 3-1.
Northwest responded again, but this time took the lead. They scored 3 runs in the 3rd giving them a 4-3 advantage.
That lead would stand until the 5th inning, when Wilson would score again on a wild pitch. The Royals would get one more scoring chance in the top of the 7th, but failed to convert. Northwest would score an unearned run on a walk-off single to win 5-4.
Drew Wilson went 4-4 and scored 3 runs.
Chris Punka was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI.
Myles Burdick pitched 4 innings in relief for the Royals allowing just 1 unearned run.
