For the second consecutive week, the CVCA football team was locked in a back and forth game that came down to the final minutes. The Royals made the trip to Fairless to open conference play on Friday night. Both teams had some trouble on offense in the first half. The score at the break was 10-7 in favor of the home team. The 2nd half was a different story. Both schools would score 4 touchdowns in the 2nd half. CVCA had a few chances late to grab a lead, but came up just short. Fairless won the game by a score of 38-35. The Royals will host Northwest in week 5 on Friday, September 22nd.
CVCA scored the only touchdown in the 1st quarter. The capitalized on a Fairless turnover and scored on a 17 yard run by
Jack Atwood. The Falcons would again turn the ball over on the insuing drive, but CVCA's drive stalled inside the 10 and their 4th down play came up short.Â
In the 2nd quarter, Fairless was able to score on a 94 yard drive. A 20 yard run by the quarter capped off the game tying drive. Both of CVCA's drives in the quarter ended with punts. Fairless added a field just before the half to grab their first lead of the night at 10-7.Â
The first half saw just 17 combined points. The teams would explode for 56 combined points in the 2nd half. Â Fairless scored first in the 3rd quarter and increased their lead to 10. The Royals responded with a 1 yard touchdown run by
Tre Tucker.  Fairless would use their power running game to drive the field for their 3rd touchdown of the night. On the next possession for CVCA,
Elijah Payne connected with
Michael Bevington for a 74 yard touchdown pass. The score was 24-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter.Â
After a big defensive stop, CVCAÂ regained the lead on another
Tre Tucker touchdown. He raced to the right pylon and scored from 4 yards out. CVCA grabbed their first lead since the first half.  Fairless was able to answer with a touchdown of their own. Trailing by just 3, the Royals were looking for a game winning drive. Instead a costly fumble gave the ball back to Falcons in plus territory. They kept the ball on the ground and increased their lead by to 10 with just 2 minutes remaining. CVCA scored quickly to make things interesting again.
Elijah Payne connect with
Isaac Strausser from 13 yards out setting up an onside kick attempt. On the ensuing kick, the Royals recovered the ball, but had done so a yard early. Fairless ran out the clock for a 38-35 win.
