The CVCA football team hosted Campbell Memorial on Friday night for their 2017 home opener. The Royals moved to 2-0 on the year with a 41-21 win. CVCA took an early 13-0 lead and answered each of the Red Devils' scored from that point one. The last time the Royals opened the season with 2 wins was in 2008. The Royals will look to continue to play well in Week 3 when they host Canton South (Friday, September 8th).
After both teams punted on their opening drives, the Royals were looking at another 3 and out. Instead, the Royals executed a fake punt to perfect to continue the drive. One play later, Junior
Tre Tucker raced 54 yards for the game's first score. The CVCA defense forced another punt to get the offense back on the field. The Royals were drive 70 yards in 5 plays to take a 13-0 lead. Senior quarterback
Elijah Payne capped the drive with an 11 yard touchdown run.
In the 2nd quarter, Campbell Memorial found a response. They connected on a 44 yard touchdown pass to move within 6. Later in the quarter.
Elijah Payne again found the end-zone on the ground. His 5 yard touchdown run again increase the Royals' lead to 13. The Red Devils answered quickly with a 64 yard touchdown through the air. With the score at 20-14, CVCA was hoping to score again before half-time. They will able to score on their final drive on the half. Payne scored his 3rd rushing touchdown of the night. This one came from 6 yards out. At the half, CVCA led 27-14 and controlled the momentum.
Campbell Memorial would receive the ball first in the 2nd half, and the Royals defense knew the opening possession would be critical. Giving up a score could alter the momentum. The CVCA defense stood tall with a 4th down stop and forcing the turnover on downs. The Royals jumped out to a 20 point lead with the first score in the 3rd quarter.
Tre Tucker took the ball running towards the right side. At the last second, he stopped a threw to wide open
Jack Atwood for an 8 yard touchdown. CVCA took the 34-14 lead in the final quarter.
With the Royals in control, the Red Devils would have to score quick and score often. The CVCA defense made sure that didn't happen. Campbell Memorial added one 4th quarter score but couldn't get the game back to one possession. The Royals' sealed the win with an 1 yard touchdown run by
Jack Atwood.
CVCA's defense forced 5 turnovers and 4 punts in 14 drives. The offense accumulated 447 yards of total offense and scored over 40 points for the 2nd straight week.
