CVCA boarded their buses and traveled to Orrville on Friday night. The Royals (3-2, 1-1) and Red Riders (2-3, 1-1) were both looking to jumpstart the 2nd half of their season with a big conference win. They battled back and forth throughout the first half. After a scoreless 1st quarter, it looked like a few scores might win the game. The teams traded big plays in the 2nd quarter and entered half-time tied at 14. CVCA exploded for 21 points in the 3rd quarter and never looked back. They added another 21 points in the 4th quarter and allowed just one 2nd half touchdown. The Royals won by a score of 56-20. It is the first time CVCA has scored over 50 points since the 2011 season. They are now 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the PAC-7. They will host Tuslaw on Friday, October 6th. That will be CVCA's homecoming game this year.
Neither team was able to score in the opening quarter on Friday night. The Royals and Red Riders traded offensive possessions that both ended on a turnover on downs. CVCA opened the scoring with an 8 yard touchdown run by
Jack Atwood in the 2nd quarter. Orrville answered with a touchdown drive of their own. CVCA's defense had a chance at both a fumble recovery and interception on this drive, but failed to capitalize. After a CVCA punt, Orrville took advantage of a short field and moved the ball inside the 10 yard line. They looked primed to score and take their first lead of the game. The Royals had something different in mind.
Jack Atwood jumped in front of an Orrville wide receiver and intercepted the ball on the 2 yard line. Atwood then raced 98 yards for his 2nd score of the night. CVCA had the momentum, but it wouldn't last long. On the ensuing kick-off, Orrville's kick returner raced 87 yards for a game tying score. The game was tied 14-14 as the team's entered half-time.
The 2nd half would be all CVCA.
Ben Watterson opened the half with a 57 yard interception return for a touchdown. CVCA forced another turnover to regain possession. They would score another touchdown, this time through the air.
Tre Tucker beat single coverage and
Elijah Payne threw him a perfect ball for a 45 yard touchdown. The Royals would score for a 3rd time in the 3rd quarter when
Tre Tucker raced 16 yards for his 2nd score of the night. At the end of the 3rd quarter, CVCA was in control and led 35-14.
Orrville put together a touchdown drive in the 4th quarter to snap the string of 21 unanswered points by the Royals.
Tre Tucker blocked the extra point to maintain a 15 point lead. From that point on, the game was dominated by CVCA's offense and defense. The Royals added 3 touchdowns in the game's final quarter.
Tre Tucker connected with
Jack Atwood for a 13 yard touchdown pass. Atwood scored his 4th TD of the night on a 58 yard touchdown run that featured a spin move near midfield to beat the only defender with a chance to tackle him. In the game's final minute, back-up quarterback
Michael Bevington raced 35 yards for the game's final score. Coach Larlham described this game as a "football family win" and had high praise for all of his players on this night.
